ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - Over the last sixteen years, family, friends and neighbors have joined together to celebrate the life and memory of Mark Spatola. This year, on August 13, 2019 that tradition continues. Vitalant Blood Services invites everyone to join us at the Charles Hesse Parish Hall of St Agnes Church located at 55 South Avenue in Atlantic Highlands from 2:00 pm – 9:00 pm to remember this extraordinary young man.
Mark Spatola was a young man fully engaged in life and enjoying all the possibilities of the future when he was struck down with Leukemia. His short battle with the disease was fought with the same ferocious spirit in which he lived his life. To honor that memory, his family and friends have crusaded for years to help repay the kindness of the community who donated blood and platelets he needed during his brief illness. For many years, Joe Hawley joined that fight and now his life is honored next to Mark’s in this annual Celebration of Life.
Everyday, every 2 seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion due to illness, treat an injury or during surgery. The blood on the shelf is what supplies that need. Since there is no artificial substitute for blood, without people donating daily, we would simply run out of blood. According to the NJ State Department of Health, while 60% of the people in NJ are eligible to donate, only 3.6% actually do. Summer is often a difficult time for blood collections due to vacations and summer activities placing the blood supply in critical condition. Join Chairpersons Kim Spatola and Loretta Gluckstein on August 13, 2019 to mark this special Celebration of Life by scheduling a blood or platelet donation. To schedule a blood or Platelet donation, please contact Loretta Gluckstein at 732-872-9305. For the first time this year, Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry representatives will be on site to join the fight to battle Leukemia and provide the community an active role in becoming a Bone Marrow Donor. Bone Marrow Donor information and swabbing will be available from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
