FREEHOLD – A 76-year old woman died and her passenger was critically injured during a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in Freehold Township, announced Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
On January 16, at approximately 12:57 p.m., Freehold Township Police with the assistance of Freehold Township Police Department Traffic Unit Officer Kevin Cherney, responded to the scene of multiple vehicle collision at the intersection of US Highway 9 and Craig Road. Derrick T. Gyengo, 33, of Laurence Harbor, was travelling northbound in a 2009 Honda Accord on US Highway 9, when he collided at the intersection of Craig Road with a 2013 Lexus driven by John Scranton Jr., 59, of Howell, who was in the process of making a left turn from East Freehold Road onto US Highway 9 southbound. After the initial impact with the 2013 Lexus, Gyengo’s Honda continued northbound where a secondary collision ensued with a 2003 Toyota Camry, driven by Patricia Limone, 76, and her front passenger, her husband James Limone, 78, both of Lakewood. Limone was proceeding westbound through the intersection of US Highway 9 from East Freehold Road to Craig Road. Both Patricia and James Limone suffered extensive injuries as a result of the collision.
Both Patricia and James Limone were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Patricia was taken to CentraState Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased at 2:09 p.m. James Limone was taken to Jersey Shore Medical University Medical Center, where he is currently in critical condition.
Gyengo was uninjured in the collision.
John Scranton Jr. and a male passenger were both uninjured in the collision.
The crash remains under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Freehold Police Department along with the Monmouth County Serious Crash Analysis Response Team (SCART). The crash scene was assisted by Manalapan Police Department, Freehold First Aid, East Freehold Fire Department, Manalapan First Aid, and MONOC Paramedics.
