MIDDLETOWN, NJ - Westminster Presbyterian Church (WPC) is now offering a Taizé Worship Service on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm. The unique Worship experience is one of the few regularly scheduled Taizé Services offered anywhere in Monmouth County.
Taizé prayer is the creation of a monastic community in Taizé, France, founded in the 1940s by a Swiss monk known as Brother Roger, who was especially interested in bringing Catholics and Protestants together. There is no preaching or teaching as you might expect in a formal religious service. This is just an elegant and simple candlelight service featuring short readings from Scripture, prayers for peace, beautiful Psalm-based songs, repeated over and over in a darkened Sanctuary, and brief periods of silence for reflection.
On a very practical level, Taizé is a calming, quieting, welcome respite from the craziness of everyday life. On a spiritual level, it can be transporting and almost mystical. It can infuse peace, at least for a little while, into our lives.
Westminster has built a quiet and spiritual evening around the monthly Service beginning at 6:45 pm, with a brief session of intercessory prayer, followed by candlelight Taizé worship at 7 pm, and a personal Prayer Vigil supported by peaceful music for those who wish to stay afterward.
