RED BANK, NJ - "Operation Take Back" will take place on Saturday, April 30th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Police Headquarters, 90 Monmouth Street. Residents will have the opportunity to bring in unused, unwanted, and expired medications. The goal of the program is to allow the citizens of New Jersey to deliver all of their unused, unwanted, or expired medications to law enforcement officials who can in turn dispose of these controlled substances in a safe and non-hazardous manner.

The Red Bank Environmental Commission reminds residents that nearly 4 billion prescriptions are filled in the United States every year, and it has been estimated that as much as a third of the dispensed medication goes unused - leading to potentially 200 million pounds of pharmaceuticals that could adversly affect the environment if disposed of improperly. Studies have demonstrated that pharmaceuticals are present in our nation's waterways, and further research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecological harm.
