MIDDLETOWN – A new round of improvement projects are scheduled to be completed at several township recreation facilities this year.

“The Township Committee is committed to providing quality recreational facilities throughout the Township,” said Mayor Stephanie C. Murray. “We will continue to review park usage and consider changes that best reflect the needs and interests of the community.”

Projects scheduled this year include various field improvements at Middletown Township Thompson (MTT) Park, Lincroft Acres, Fairview Soccer fields, Bodman Park, and McMahon Park. Improvements include soccer goal replacements, fencing upgrades, infield and backstop improvements, seeding, fertilizing and top-soiling. The Township also plans to make necessary upgrades to the MTT Park Clubhouse bathrooms and to increase lighting in the parking areas at McMahon Park, said Township Engineer and Public Works Director Ted Maloney.

Meanwhile, the Township is developing plans this year to construct a second synthetic multi-purpose sports field and to convert a portion of Applebrook Park into a new soccer field, Mercantante said.

In 2013, the Township Committee, in partnership with the Board of Education, opened a synthetic multi-purpose sports field at Nutswamp Elementary School and constructed a new grass soccer field. Other 2013 improvements included soccer field renovations at West Front Street Park and Fairview Soccer fields as well as infield upgrades at the Normandy Park baseball field, Maloney said.

The Township Committee established a new structure for athletic field permits in 2013. Fees collected directly fund field construction and improvement projects.
