MIDDLETOWN, NJ - At 4:03 AM on Saturday October 19th, 2013, the Middletown Township Fire Department was dispatched to a “report a structure fire at 15 Thompson Avenue” in the Leonardo section of the Township.  Approximately 45 firefighters from 3 companies of the Middletown Township Fire Department (Brevent Park, Community, and Belford Engine Fire Companies), under the command of Department Chief John D’Altilio, responded to the scene.   The first arriving police units confirmed a working structure fire in a home under construction at the corner of Burlington and Thompson Avenues.

MTFD First Assistant Chief Rick Hibell quickly arrived and observed that the heat from the fully engulfed, 2 ½ story building was so intense that it was starting to melt the siding on adjacent houses.  Within minutes, units from the Brevent Park and Community Fire Companies, were on the scene and began dousing the inferno.  Chief D’Altilio directed the firefighters to employ protective water “curtains” to curb the fire from extending to the nearby structures.  The fire was brought under control by 4:45 AM and fire units remained on the scene until 5:45 AM.

The unoccupied structure was completely destroyed.   A vehicle parked on the building lot at 15 Thompson also caught on fire and was severely damage.  Houses at 13 Thompson Avenue, 22 Thompson Avenue, 50 Burlington Avenue, and 71 Burlington Avenue sustained some exterior damage.

Also assisting at the scene were the MTFD Air Unit and the Leonardo First Aid Squad.

There were no reported injuries during the incident.
