MIDDLETOWN, NJ - At 11:14 AM on Thursday May 16th, 2013, the Middletown Township Fire Department was dispatched to a reported “cell tower on fire” on the property adjacent to the Township’s Fire Academy in the Lincroft section of the Township.  Approximately 30 firefighters from 4 companies of the Middletown Township Fire Department, under the command of Department Chief John D’Altilio, responded to the scene.   Upon arrival the firefighters found a fire burning in the interior of the cell tower structure.   The fire could not be safely attacked until crews from Jersey Central Power arrived and shut down the power to the cell tower.   The firefighters extinguished the fire within 20 minutes after the electric power was shut off.

The cell tower sustained heavy fire damage and was not put back into service.

There were no reported injuries.

The fire is being investigated by the Middletown Township Fire Prevention Bureau.
