MIDDLETOWN, NJ - At 5:23 AM on Monday November 26, 2012, the Middletown Township Fire Department was dispatched to 12 Chapman Terrace in the Port Monmouth section of the Township for a “report of a possible occupied structure fire” at that location.  Approximately 45 firefighters from 4 companies of the Middletown Township Fire Department (Belford Engine, Belford Independent, Community, and East Keansburg Fire Companies), under the command of Deputy Chief John D’Altilio, responded to the scene.

The first arriving Middletown Township police units ascertained from neighbors that the residents were not home at the time.  Upon their arrival, the firefighters encountered a 2 story residential structure with flames coming out of all the second floor windows.  Initial attempts to extinguish the blaze from the interior were halted due to concerns that the structure might collapse and the firefighters assumed a more defensive exterior attack posture.  Deputy Chief D’Altilio declared the fire under control by 6:05 AM and all Fire Department units cleared the scene by 8:30 AM.

Also assisting at the scene were the MTFD Air Unit and the Port Monmouth First Aid Squad.

The structure suffered extensive smoke and fire damage.

There were no reported injuries.

The cause fire is being investigated by the Middletown Township Fire Prevention Bureau.
