MIDDLETOWN, NJ  - On Thursday, April 12, the Cemetery Sub-Committee of the Middletown Landmarks Committee met at the Middletown Township Public Library to discuss the restoration of the Applegate Cemetery located on Cedar Avenue and Burlington Avenue in Leonardo, and the Gulden Cemetery located on the border of Middletown and Holmdel near the Garden State Parkway, exit 114.

The meeting was attended by members of the Leonardo Citizens Committee, Karen Mitschele, Chairman of the Sub-Committee and the Girl Scout Troop 1242 Cadets, and members of the Gulden family, Fred and Daryl Gulden, whose family has lived in the Middletown area since 1642.

For the Applegate Cemetery the project will involve cleaning up the brush and removing trees.  The tree removal will be done by the Boylen and Hafnagel Tree Companies of Leonardo.  The gravestones in the Applegate Cemetery moved over the years, so they will have to be restored to their correct places in the cemetery, as well as having the names on the stones inscribed again.  The Girl Scout Troop 1242 Cadets Sonia, Natasha and Emily will do the research for the gravestones of the Applegate Cemetery.

The project for the Gulden Cemetery will also involve the clean up of brush for its restoration.
