HIGHLANDS, NJ - The Highlands Fire Department has secured a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.  The steel will be transported Wednesday, September 7 to Veterans Park on Bay Avenue. 

An escort of emergency vehicles will meet in Keyport at 5:00 p.m. and follow behind the steel as it travels along Highway 36 to Highlands Veterans Park.

The steel, identified as I-0105c  will be permanently displayed at the Firehouse with accent lighting and a mural, according to a release from Building Committee Chairman, Michael Armstrong. 

Pieces of steel from the World Trade Center, which was destroyed September 11, 2001, have been distributed to fire departments and other organizations to memorialize the victims of the tragedy.

Highlands Fire Department submitted their application to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey which was accepted on June 27, 2011.  They will pick up the steel at JFK Airport and transport it to the site of the World Trade Center disaster in Manhattan, then, carry it to Highlands.

Fire Departments and Emergency Services agencies from other towns have been invited to join the procession tomorrow from the Garden State Parkway to Highlands.

A formal September 11th Memorial Service will be held at Veterans Park on September 11th at 4:00PM.  All are encouraged to attend.
