RED BANK, NJ - To celebrate the birth of William James “Count” Basie, born in Red Bank on August 21, 1904, the Red Bank Public Library through the month of August will display an original portrait of the great pianist and big band leader painted by Demetrius Patterson of Tinton Falls. Accompanying the portrait will be a display of books, CDs, pictures, and information about Basie, a leading figure of the swing era in jazz, whose career began with piano lessons from his mother and flourished until his death on April 26, 1984. Patterson, known for his unique style of colorful and lively paintings, is loaning his work to the library for this special exhibit.
While summer events continue for another month, the Red Bank Public Library Adult Department announces a favorite returning program and two new programs coming in September.
If you love to write, but your words have not yet taken flight, join award-winning journalist Gilda Rogers for “Write Now!” This new series of writing workshops at the Red Bank Public Library begins September 14, 2011, and will continue on the second Wednesday of each month from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Designed to take your writing to the next level, these workshops will explore the basics of the writing process: character development, plot, detail, organization, and creativity. Participants will delve into fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Whether you are a novice or someone who is ready for your voice to soar, this workshop will take you where you want to go. You will be introduced to guest authors, poets, editors, and more. Your departure time is “Write Now!”
Workshop leader, Gilda Rogers, owner of Frank Talk Art Bistro and Books in Red Bank has been a columnist with the Asbury Park Press and the managing editor for Newark’s City News. She has written for weekly newspapers, travel magazines, and online news media. She is also the author of Arrested Development: The State of Black Achievement and Education in Hip-Hop America. Gilda has taught writing in Brookdale Community College’s Community Development Program and served as an adjunct history professor at Brookdale.

Nancy Anderson of Blackbird Learning Associates will return to the Red Bank Public Library Wednesday, September 14, 2011, from 7:00 -9:00 p.m. with “Job Search for Moms,” a workshop based on her recent book of the same title. Returning to the workplace after an absence can be intimidating, especially in these days of economic uncertainty. Many mothers have questions about their career direction, current skill sets, and creating a support system. This program will help you answer those questions. “Job Search for Moms” will present the skills needed to identify your career direction, the skills needed for resume development, and the tools needed to develop network contacts. Although this program is targeted for mothers returning to the workforce, it is suitable for anyone in the process of seeking employment or a new career. A series of four Thursday evening art classes, “Drawing and Painting with Rocco Scibetta,” will take place September 8 through September 29, 2011, from 7:00 to 8:45 p.m. Artist Rocco Scibetta will be returning to the library for this popular class featuring basic principles of art for the beginner to the advanced artist. The Red Bank Public Library in partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County is providing free conversational English classes this summer for adults 18 and over this summer through August 18, 2011, on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The classes are free and registration is not required.

In August the Red Bank Public Library continues its regular schedule of programming, beginning on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, with “Money and Your Family,” a free monthly forum on timely financial topics presented the first Wednesday of the month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. by Red Bank resident Robin Goldberg, a former business executive with extensive financial experience. Artists seeking inspiration, motivation, and time to devote to their work are invited to attend the Artists’ Workshop on the first Thursday of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Red Bank Public Library. The next meeting of the Artists’ Workshop at the Red Bank Public Library will take place on August 4, 2011. Red Bank artist Joe Bergholm is the Workshop’s Artist-in-Residence and works with the artists as a group and individually, offering suggestions for subjects as well as guidance with principles of art such as color, composition, and the selection and use of materials. The Artists’ Workshops are free and no registration is required. Participants should bring their own drawing and painting materials, although oils are not permitted because of ventilation concerns. The program is supported by a generous contribution from the Friends of the Red Bank Public Library.

The Red Bank Senior Center in cooperation with the Red Bank Public Library hosts a book discussion group on the last Monday of each month at the Senior Center at 1:00 p.m. Red Bank Borough residents age 60 and over are welcome to join the Center and participate in these or any of its other great programs.
