Teaching Civics in High School
August 26, 2021 @ 7:00 pm
The League of Women Voters of Monmouth County is offering a virtual workshop, open to the public, 7 p.m. August 26, that demonstrates the application of the celebrated Harvard Case Study approach to the teaching of high school social studies and civics.
Ocean Township High School teachers Krysten Semerano and Allison Connolly, who represented the Leagues of Southern and Western Monmouth at Harvard Case Method training held earlier this year, are conducting the workshop using the Harvard-provided case study “Martin Luther King and the Struggle for Black Voting Rights.”
To register, visit lwvsmc.org and click on the Big Red Button. Registrants will receive a link to the case study, which takes readers to the point where MLK must decide whether to lead his marchers over the Pettus Bridge, March 9, 1965. The workshop discussion will explore the decisions made and their consequences. Participants are asked to read the material in advance of the workshop.
This event is open to the public free of charge and is of particular interest to high school social studies/civics teachers, anyone wanting to know more about the Harvard Case Study method, and those who welcome substantive discussion of voting rights.
