*editor’s note: The Herald mistakenly posted the following announcement from last year. A new announcement will be forthcoming.
ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Back by popular demand, FilmOneFest is holding its 3rd Annual Virtual 24 Hour Film Slam. This year, filmmakers will be given 24 hours from 7pm Friday June 4th to 7pm Friday June 5th to make a one-minute film using a prop, a location, and a line of dialogue. Then, on June 12th, a screening will be held in person at the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council Gallery, 54 1st Ave, Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716. A simulcast will be presented on our social media platforms.
This is the eighth Film Slam event in seven years, and the third being held virtually. “With the virtual concept, you are watching the live event with people all over the world. That is really exciting,” said Corinna Thuss, Director of FilmOneFest. The free event will be judged by FilmOneFest judges.
The evening of June 4, filmmakers will receive the three criteria via an announcement on social media and email. Filmmakers then have only 24 hours to conceptualize, film, score, edit, and download their movies to be submitted for competition. Winners receive laurels and bragging rights, along with recognition on our social media platforms.
Films are judged by our FilmOneFest judging panel based on the creative inclusion of the assignment items. The People’s Choice Award will be selected using a social media poll on June 12th.

The virtual event was the brainchild of Gina Melnyk, volunteer Social Media coordinator, after the pandemic made the live event that was usually held on the campus of Monmouth University a no-go in 2020. “We had a lot of good feedback, so even when we could return to meeting in person, we figured, let’s stick with virtual submissions.” But Melnyk added audiences missed the thrill of seeing their work on the big screen, so FilmOneFest is holding the screening at the Gallery the following week.
Thuss emphasized that having a live audience in one place is still one of the best features of FilmOneFest events. “It’s great getting back to watching movies together,” she said. However, we will continue to use technology to be together and celebrate the importance of art—and short films in particular— to lift our spirits and share our stories.”
The Film Slam screening will be available in its entirety on Facebook and FilmOneFest’s YouTube Channel.
The annual FilmOneFest Film Festival celebrates the super short film under two minutes in length. The event takes place in the Atlantic Highlands Marina on the third Saturday of July. This family-friendly free event will be on July 16, 2022 from 6 pm to 11:00 pm under the stars. Attendees can enjoy strolling among vendors, listening to bands, and enjoying dinner from local food trucks. The rain date will be the following day, July 17th at the same time.
