MIDDLETOWN, NJ – Children of all ages are invited to kick off spring break week at the Middletown Township Public Library (MTPL) with Fly! Bessie! Fly! Meet Bessie Coleman, a historical re-enactment portraying the groundbreaking aviator, on Monday, April 18th! Actress Daisy Century of American History Theatre will portray Bessie Coleman during the in- person program in the library’s Community Room. Attendees will hear how in 1921 Bessie Coleman defied the expectations of her time and became the first woman of color in the world to earn her pilots’ license. Born in Texas in 1892, Coleman travelled to France to learn to fly when American flight schools refused her because of her mixed African American and Cherokee heritage. Between her daring aerial maneuvers as a stunt pilot, Coleman used her fame to encourage other men and women of color to pursue pilots’ careers and refuse to take no for an answer.
