On December 18, 1787, New Jersey became the 3rd State admitted into the Union.
In 1664, James, Duke of York took control of New Netherlands (later NY). King Charles II granted all the land between the Connecticut and Delaware rivers to James.
James later gave two of his friends, Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret, proprietorships over the area that would become East and West Jersey.
In 1702, East and West Jersey were joined by the crown into one colony with an elected assembly.
