SANDY HOOK – The Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest still operating lighthouse in the United States, located within historic Fort Hancock, which is maintained by the National Park Service, is following Covid restrictions consistent with all Park events  and is planning the Lighthouse Challenge  outside the Lighthouse Keepers Quarters rather than within the building.

Visitors during the Lighthouse Challenge weekend set for Oct. 16 and 17,  will be able to purchase their $4 registration sticker there or at any of the ten lighthouses, museum and three life saving stations on the Challenge. The registration fee , which comes with a frameable collage of all the sites, enables guests to receive a sticker depicting that site at each site on the Challenge. The tour officially ends at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Oct. 17 in order to complete the Challenge. Completers of the challenger will also have their name in a drawing for a basket of assorted prizes valued at more than $500.

Rangers at Sandy Hook will be stationed outside the Keepers Quarters to provide information from 8 am to 6 pm on both days of the tour.  Lighthouse Challenge t-shirts, hats and pins will be available for purchase. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the lighthouse grounds, as well as other portions of  historic Fort Hancock. McFly’s on the Hook, a café close to the Lighthouse, will also be open for light refreshments and lunch.

Sandy Hook Light and the Navesink Twin Lights at Highlands are the two northern most lighthouses on the Challenge. Traveling south along the coast, the other lighthouses of the Atlantic Ocean are the Sea Girt Light, the Squan Beach Life Saving Station, Barnegat Light and museum, Tucker’s Island Light, Absecon Light, US Life Saving Stations 30 and Tatham and the Cape May and Delaware Bay Lights. On the river and Delaware are the East Point Light, Finns Point Light and Tinicum Light.
