On July 26, 2021 Hazlet Police Department received a report from a concerned resident that the Shell Gas station convenience mart located on State Highway 36 and Middle Road, was selling Vape tobacco products to underage persons. A supervisor immediately detailed officers to conduct surveillance on the convenience mart in order to see if the store clerks were checking customers for identification.

During this time, the officers observed several transactions and were able to confirm that the business was selling these products to underage persons. Once confirmation was made, officers placed Lakhwinder Singh under arrest for 2C:33-13.1, Selling Tobacco Products to Someone Under the Age of 21 which is a petty disorderly person’s offense.

Singh was processed and released with a future court date. As always, all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Although this was a different clerk, this is the same business that we found was selling vape products to underage persons less than a year ago. Unfortunately, the penalty for this offense has not been a deterrent so far, so we will continue to look for additional ways to take stronger enforcement action.

We thank the concerned citizen for the information provided and we encourage anyone that has information about establishments selling Vapes to underage persons to please contact us at [email protected]
