To Whom It May Concern,
In the weeks leading up to Memorial Day Weekend, State Senator Declan O’Scanlon and Monmouth County Freeholder, Gerry Scharfenberger, released statements and showed up at “rallies” to reopen the state and restart the economy that had been put under lockdown by Governor Murphy. In fact, Mr. O’Scanlon even encouraged people to break the law. Murphy’s choice to grind NJ to a halt in mid-March was to ensure the flattening of the CoVid curve and to not only protect the most vulnerable of our residents, but to also keep our healthcare system from being overwhelmed by a deluge of cases.
Over the past week, as tensions mount over the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer and 25 major metropolitan areas across the nation hold public protests demanding action, neither of these elected officials has released as intense a statement as they did when they stood with small business owners. Where is the outrage about the President idly throwing around militaristic rhetoric and threats toward American citizens who are exercising their first amendment rights, largely peacefully and within the rules of the system? Where is that bold, American spirit these men touted to protect the freedoms of business owners? A questioning of the most powerful Republican by other, elected Republicans would go a long way – much longer than my personal, progressive criticism would ever get.
