MIDDLETOWN, NJ – On Monday, January 13, 2020, Governor Phil Murphy signed into law The Dietitian/Nutritionist Licensing Act. New Jerseyans can now rest assured that the nutrition advice they receive is coming from a qualified professional with the knowledge, skills, and competency necessary to provide evidenced-based safe and ethical nutrition therapy. The Dietitian/Nutritionist Licensing Act sets strong objective qualifications for individuals seeking a license to provide nutrition care services for the intended purpose of treatment or management of a diagnosed disease or medical condition.

“This comprehensive nutrition and dietetics licensure bill, with rigorous title protections cements Registered Dietitians Nutritionists (RDNs) as the professionals with standardized education, clinical training, continuing education and national credentialing requirements required to provide medical nutrition therapy, thus ensuring the safety, health and wellness of the New Jersey population” said Dr. Janet Reid-Hector, President, New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The law reduces consumer confusion and potential for fraud and abuse when seeking qualified providers by limiting the use of certain titles—such as nutritionist and nutrition counselor, nutrition therapist—to providers legally licensed in the state.

The New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics represents over 2300 registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetic technicians, registered in New Jersey; it is an affiliate of the National Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which represents more than 107,000 registered dietitian nutritionists; nutrition and dietetic technicians, registered; advanced degree nutritionists and students pursuing degrees in the field of nutrition. On behalf of our membership, we thank Governor Murphy for signing this legislation into law!
