anne mikolay 2018Trump Anxiety Disorder is the term coined by psychiatric professionals to describe the emotions experienced by Americans during these volatile political times. We are stressed daily; consequently, we suffer depression, anxiety, a sense of foreboding. Our President’s behavior has even reportedly triggered post-traumatic stress disorder in individuals who have previously personally experienced bullying or mental abuse. Americans feel helpless as we witness political chaos we are presently unable to do anything about.

Trump’s base views Trump Anxiety Disorder as a type of derangement and claims if you don’t support Donald Trump and can’t see all the good he has accomplished during his tenure, your view of reality is skewed, and you’ve been brainwashed by the fake media and the abundance of alternative facts. Trump Derangement Syndrome has emerged a derogatory term for any negative reaction or allegedly unfounded criticism of Donald Trump. Trump Derangement Syndrome is a Trump supporter’s convenient, dismissive explanation of opposition to the current administration.

Sometimes, I think I have Trump Anxiety Disorder. My reaction to Donald Trump is visceral. I’ve even had nightmares about the man. To me, he’s a frightening, loose cannon. He is not, however, the sole cause of my anxiety. The people who put him in office are. The people who no longer speak to me because I don’t share their allegiance to Trump. The people who fearfully hide behind politics and religion and concentrate on our differences rather than on our similarities. Trump did not create these people. He merely capitalized on their vulnerabilities and pulled their fears and prejudices to the forefront. I’m afraid now, too, but for very different reasons.

Nobody is perfect. Everybody is bigoted in one way or another. Everybody is afraid of the unknown. That’s human nature. But what you do with your bigotry and your fear defines you. What you believe is right defines you. How you treat the stranger beside you defines you. How you treat those with opinions that differ from your own defines you.

On one hand, we have Trump detractors suffering from Trump-induced anxiety; on the other hand, we have Trump supporters believing such anxiety is pure delusion, and the cure is Donald Trump. Never the twain shall meet. But that’s not the point. The point is America is ailing. America is sick. And the common denominator here is Donald Trump.
