ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS –  Councilman James Murphy has endorsed political newcomer Deborah Appello in her first bid for public office in this borough, saying she energy and enthusiasm will be an asset to the local Board of Education.

In a letter being sent to votes in the borough, Murphy said he has known Appello many years and has a rich background in education which will serve the taxpayers well as a board member. The candidate for one of the three seats to be decided in the November election has been the administrator of a high performing elementary school district in Staten Island for more than 20 years, where she has the responsibility of overseeing the education of more than 1,000 students from pre-K through grade 5.

“We are very lucky someone with her rich background is eager to volunteer her passion and commitment to our board and students,” Murphy said. “She will vote in the best interest of both the taxpayers and the school community.”

Running with the slogan “ Deborah is the right candidate at the right time!” Appello earned her undergraduate degree at St. John’s University and a master’s in special education at The City University of New York. She is the recipient of the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Military Order of the Purple Heart for America and supervises a staff of 150 employees. Appello is confident of her experience and knowledge of contract negotiations with both teacher’s and administrator’s unions and is skilled in both emergency management and safety procedures, in addition to have extensive experience with special needs students.  In her present capacity, she has partnered with parent and teacher associations as well as other community-based organizations.  A native of New York,  her family spent summers at Cape May, NJ, and she later found Atlantic Highlands to settle through friends who live in the borough. Annello lives on Ave D with her fiancé and two dogs, Leonardo and Cleopatria, and currently commutes from here to  her  administrator’s position in Staten Island daily.
