david prown 120“Maiden” is a captivating documentary set in Britain in the 80’s introducing us Tracy Edwards.  She is a fiercely independent and head-strong teen then as a young woman rebels of sort (from her family) and joins a round the world sailing race as a vessels cook. That experience and all the nuances of sailing with a male crew injected her with a crazy drive to realize a dream that nobody could ever conceive

Not only were women never a part of the sailing crews on the iconic/world famous Whitbread Round the World Race, but to lead the charge from buying a junker, to fixing and then captaining an entire female team/crew was inconceivable

Because this story pre-dated social media, I’m not sure how much the world learned about this story 30 years ago (I remember a hint).  Awesome thru film they remind us of this staggering achievement

The video then was totally captivating (amazing it exists) along with the interspersing of interviews with the leader and her team “then and now” is so engaging.

Who in their right mind would participate in a 33,000 mile race in relatively close quarters surrounded by nothing but water and to solve the mystery “To find Wind”.  Sailing doesn’t interest me at all but watching them up close was fascinating!

Hard to compare this sports achievement (and their level of success) in a highly traditional “man’s only world” and in year one “shock the world” on multiple levels

Great stuff and must see on a big screen.
