david prown 120Didn’t know diddly about the new independent film called “Wild Rose” playing in Red Bank. Just fit the time slot, saw favorable percentage ratings and I was off.

This film was a most pleasant surprise & thank you Red Bank Bow-Tie cinema bringing it to us. In short, you have a foul mouth young mother who just served a year in jail for drugs and now coming home to continue her country music dream of getting to Nashville.

Rose-Lynn is played magnificently by Jessie Buckley. Interesting twist is that this story is set in Glasgow, Scotland..not exactly the hotbed of country music. The bigger elephant in the room is that she has 2 young children (with country music names of Wynonna & Lyle) who she continues to let down and care little about. When she tries to connect with them/be a good Mom…lots of silence & distance.

Luckily she has a legendary mother played beautifully by Julie Walters who totally takes care of them and they adore her.

To get $ for her travels to Nashville, she lands a maid-like position in a very upper crust home. The wife Susannah is a glowing woman with a very supportive and encouraging spirit who opens doors for Rose-Lynn to pursue her dream.

The Yang and Yang of Scotland and country music makes the story line more interesting along with this not very likable Rose-Lynn. This self centered mother happens to have a glorious country music voice. When this bad ass sings her traditional country music songs, she transforms into this most sincere, likable talent. Her mind and body go to another place (maybe Nashville) and becomes a most riveting talent.

Mostly original songs (which are special) and some covers. The 100 minute movie zips along with a very nice positive last 20 minutes. I would NOT call the script predictable and most enjoyable.
