RED BANK, NJ – Susan Hockaday sees Global Climate Change as a daunting challenge for all of us. Her work in the windows of the Art Alliance of Red Bank seeks to bring together the global and personal aspects of Climate Change.

Hockaday finds that Plastic material has become one of the main tools in making her current photographs. It not only represents the vast reach of the petroleum industry, but it functions in every part of our lives.  It is universal and very personal at the same time: familiar, intimate, and now actually part of our bodies.  Plastic objects are a language we all share. They are often beautiful and very carefully designed for special uses.  They mirror our lives.

The other part of her work is about studying nature, in all its complexity and profusion. It has always been a consuming interest and the focus of her art.

In the Gyre Series photographs shows in the windows of the Art Alliance she has brought these two parts of our world together. They are formed from the same atoms, but now these realms are in combat, struggling for control of our environment.

In the photographs these elements are layered, intertwined, and arranged against vivid colors to suggest the complexity of our situation. She leaves the interpretation of the images up to the viewer.
