From the Atlantic Highlands Board of Education – Negotiation Update

As the tax payers of the Atlantic Highlands School District are aware, the Board of Education and the Atlantic Highlands Education Association have engaged in collective negotiations for a successor contract since January, 2018.

Unfortunately, the negotiations process came to a standstill over the summer.  The Education Association filed for impasse and the Board of Education agreed to file jointly so as to move the process along quickly.  We are now waiting for a mediator to be assigned to our case.  Once we are assigned a mediator, we will schedule a meeting date to continue the negotiations process with the mediator involved.

We have heard it said that the “teachers are working without a contract.”  We want to be clear on this point- by operation of law, the contract which expired in June of 2018 stays in place until we reach a new one.  Each employee of the District is guaranteed their salary and benefit protections as well as all the other requirements and protections stated in the contract.

Please be advised, the Board will be holding a special BOE meeting on October 10, 2018.  The purpose of the October 10 meeting is to allow the entire board to adjourn to executive session to discuss the status of negotiations with the AHEA.  The Board will not be making a public statement at this meeting.

On October 16, 2018, the Board will hold their regular October Board of Education meeting at 7:00pm.  The Board will be making a public statement at this meeting.

The Board remains committed to the negotiations process and is hopeful it will result in an equitable settlement for both sides. The Board will continue to work to make the Atlantic Highlands School District strong for now and years to come.  The Board appreciates the continued patience and understanding and support of the parents and community on this subject.

We look forward to seeing you at the October 16, 2018 Board of Education meeting.
