ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – Two Bayshore area graduating high school seniors have been awarded Eric Donoghue music scholarships.

       They are Mater Dei Prep’s Griffin Cole of Atlantic Highlands and Conor McCormick of Middletown.

       Both were presented by Eric’s father, former Atlantic Highlands Mayor Peter E. Donoghue.

       The scholarships bring to 40 the number given out by the Eric P. Donoghue Scholarship Foundation in memory of late musician, composer and teacher in the 15 years since his death.

       The scholarship program was instituted 2003, the year Donoghue passed away at age 32. Awards are made to area seniors who plan on pursing music and/or theater in college and thereafter. They are financed entirely through the generosity of hundreds of friends and other area residents.

       Following his graduation from Henry Hudson Regional School in Highlands, Eric attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He was a keyboardist and played in several Central Jersey jazz and rock bands. He was also a composer and a piano teacher.

       At the time of his death, Eric was the organist at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Atlantic Highlands and directed its children’s choir.

       Cole was active in the Seraph Players throughout his four years at Mater Dei Prep as well as in the school chorus, honors chorus, All-Shore Chorus and school band. He was also a member of the National and French National Honor Societies.

      He also participated in the school track and cross-country programs.

      He will be attending the Hart School of Music at the University of Hartford, where he will be participating in the musical theatre/academic honors program.

     He is the son of Jonathan and Sherrie Cole.

     McCormick was a member of the Middletown High School South High School marching band and pep band as well as the theatre arts club, appearing in several school musicals.

     He is also an Eagle Scout and was a member of the National and Spanish Honor Societies.

     He will be attending the University of New Haven, majoring in music and sound recording,

     He is the son of Michael and Tara McCormick.
