Local Event is Part of a Nationwide Initiative to Improve Kids’ Health & Well-Being

Shrewsbury, NJ – The Community YMCA invites families to get a jump on summer at Healthy Kids Day, a free community event in Matawan, Red Bank and Wall on April 21, designed to inspire children to keep their minds and bodies active now and all summer long.

Celebrated at more than 1,500 Ys across the country by over 1.2 million participants, Healthy Kids Day is a national YMCA initiative “to get more kids moving and learning, creating habits that they will continue throughout summer,” said Laurie Goganzer, President and CEO of The Community YMCA, which serves 20,000 people across Monmouth County.

Healthy Kids Day was established by the YMCA in 1992 to address critical gaps in children’s health and education, Goganzer explained. “When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles that prevent them from reaching their full potential,” Goganzer said. “In fact, research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids are prone to gain weight and fall behind academically.”

Healthy Kids Day encourages parents and guardians not to let children idle away their summer days, Goganzer said. “The day will be filled with fun, active play and educational activities to spark the imagination of kids, so they can see what they can accomplish this summer,” she said.
