ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – The Highlands Community Singers will be performing at the Gazebo in the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Yacht at 7 p.m., Sunday, July 23.
The free concert is part of the borough’s Sunday night summer concert series. The group’s other free public performance this summer is at noon, Saturday, Aug. 5 at that borough’s annual Highlands Clam Fest being staged at noon, Saturday, Aug. 5 in Huddy Park.
The 23-year-old, 15-member Highlands Community Singers was founded by the late Art Frelinghaus and is now directed by Louise I. Donoghue of Atlantic Highlands. Accordianist Eric Vagen of West Keansburg provides the accompaniment.
Among the group’s primary soloists are Rick Makin of Lincroft, Francesca Pippin of Highlands and Peter Donoghue of Atlantic Highlands, who also acts as master of ceremonies.
The singers perform a variety old-fashioned sing-along numbers, featuring its signature piece, “Happy As a Clam,” and “No Sad Sings,” both composed by Frelinghaus.
The group primarily performs for seniors citizens at various adult day care and nursing home facilities and its members reside primarily in northern Monmouth County.
