david prown 1202017 new movie selections continue to be generally uninspiring even now that we are into June. I had sort of a good feeling about the relatively well-hyped film based on a true story entitled “Megan Leavey”

The previews pretty much tell all about a sort of disjointed young lady who struggles to find herself while living at home. She decides to join the military to find a purpose and maybe to get away from Mom (Edie FAlco of The Soprano’s fame)

Played by well respected Kate Mara, the very slight and unstructured Levy struggles with the military life but you can see clearly enjoys it as a good for her at that time in her life.

A little ways into the film she discovers the K-9 dog explosive investigative unit. Of course, it takes her awhile to get into the program but then she does and is deployed to Iraq with her formerly most vicious and now well trained german shepard partner “Rex”.

The form a very strong bond and become an extremely effective team locating IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices). However one does go off injuring both of them that changes their life path.

The final third of the film we follow her both developing a relationship with a fellow Marine while also passionately trying to locate and adopt the injured Rex.

One could say it had a Disney-esque ending but at the end of the day it was a true story. If you’re not crying during the very emotional and patriotic seen at Yankee Stadium, then your heart’s a little hard.

They definitely did not sensationalize or overly sugarcoat the angst of war and the stress of serving in a highly dangerous, often unwanted country. The level of danger watching our troops operate here in Iraq monitoring checkpoints, clearing buildings and vehicles for explosives was powerful.

Film was solid and a nice story. One of the better films out the 1st half of 2017…but that isn’t saying much.
