Sponsored by the Affordable Housing Alliance With assistance from Middletown Township
Port Monmouth, NJ – The first week in June is Neighborworks week and working with the AHA and other volunteers we will change the appearance of an area that was devastated by Superstorm Sandy and debris that has been washed up for many years. Compton’s Creek is currently littered with garbage/debris and with help from the community this protected wildlife wetlands will be pristine once again. The Affordable Housing Alliance a chartered member of NeighborWorks of America is taking action cleaning up the area. As part of an annual event to bring attention to the importance of community development organized volunteers and staff are going to make a big difference for this community through hard work and neighbors helping neighbors. This event will not only be benefiting the area, but will be fun and memorable as well. There will be provisions such as garbage bags, gloves, sanitizers, wet wipes, water and other necessities for the cleanup. The fun is finding who will find the most unique items while cleaning up the area. Anyone wishing to pitch in or sponsor the event is requested to call 732-389-2958 and ask for Eva. We welcome back the volunteers of Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley and NJNG and encourage others to join them. We also expect participants from the Governor’s Office on Volunteerism and Americorps volunteers. The mayor of Middletown and the Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagnohas been invited to help as well.
The theme of the event is called “Neighborworks Works” as other chartered members across the nation sponsor similar events contributing thousands of volunteer hours to improving an area of their community. It will not only have a specific positive outcome on the targeted area but it will also bring people closer together not only for the event but in the future as they enjoy the numerous recreational opportunities provided in this section of Middletown. Previous events have included the painting of the Westside Community Center in Asbury Park, the demolition of Sandy damaged homes in Union Beach, the landscaping of a new senior residence in Millstone and the painting of the Emergency Shelter for Homeless Adults in Freehold. The Affordable Housing Alliance encourages other businesses and groups to join in a great bonding opportunity for a really good cause. Prizes will be awarded for the team with the most unusual find, the most bags of garbage, and the team who finds the most items on our treasure list. It is located at Broadway/ Church Street Bridge, over Compton’s Creek, Port Monmouth, NJ on June 9, 2017 starting at 9 AM. Work 1 hour or 6 hours. Sandy recovery material will also be available from several nonprofits still helping families recover from their losses.
