westminster presb church flagsMiddletown, NJ – Westminster Presbyterian Church (WPC) of Middletown will officially dedicate the 2016 Field of Flags during a special ceremony on Saturday, November 5th, 2016 at 10:00 am. This year’s striking memorial contains 6863 flags and was placed on the WPC Great Lawn on Tindall Road on October 15th by nearly 100 members of the congregation and local community. It will remain standing until November 19th. The Field of Flags was created 5 years ago to honor those who serve in the military, especially those who have died in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each flag in the field represents a serviceman or woman who has given their life in those conflicts.

The Field of Flags is a silent, patriotic, and poignant reminder of the cost of war. Each flag represents not only one casualty, but honors all the family members and friends whose lives have been touched by that life sacrificed in service to our nation’s ideals. The flags also brings recognition to those who have served and are currently serving in the military and symbolizes a collective hope for peace.

The dedication ceremony will feature Keynote Remarks from Christopher J. Gramiccioni, Monmouth County Prosecutor, commissioned as a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve who was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Middletown Township Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger will offer an official welcome and the dedication and blessing of the Field of Flags will be performed by Rev. Joseph Hein of WPC with assistance from local Boy and Girl Scouts of America who will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Patriotic and other special music selections will also be offered, featuring bagpiper Mr. Joe Wurtz, and a solo, Be Not Afraid, by Ms. Carly McIlvane. The event will take place on the WPC Great Lawn where the Field of Flags is located.
