Dear Editor,

The trip of nine New Jersey lawmakers to Colorado to observe retail cannabis sales won’t teach them anything worth bringing home.

While Colorado gained market share by being the first with adult retail sales, it was done with over taxation, over regulation and red tape. It has resulted in mom-and-pop shops being put out-of-business, and has locked out people with out-of-state cannabis distribution convictions from working in an industry that favors big business.

Colorado also put in a silly ban on “public consumption” that has resulted in Denver not allowing cannabis lounges and tickets for tourists. It would be more reasonable to allow cannabis smoking anywhere that tobacco is allowed. The 21 age is also problematic in that it still criminalizes 18-20 year olds.

The real innovation and quality in the U.S. cannabis industry has always come from California. Colorado’s green rush is on borrowed time.
