ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Atlantic Highlands has joined its neighboring shore towns in presenting vibrant murals for passers-by to enjoy.  Local business owner Meredith Peltz, who has always painted her Vintage Variety storefront with bright, eye-catching designs, for years wanted to see outdoor visual art throughout the town like that seen in Highlands and in Sea Bright.

After discovering that building owner Teresa D’Aguanno was interested in decorating the plywood boards covering her windows facing the Edwards Way passage, Peltz approached her friend Caroline Northrop, AH Arts Council Board member; the pair have worked with local artists for years in various capacities, promoting and hosting numerous exhibits in and around Atlantic Highlands.

“Our friend Anthony WeirdEyeOne has been painting murals in towns all over New Jersey for years,” says Peltz—“We knew he would create something incredible and unique, as well as bringing in other amazing artists to participate.”

This weekend brought the completion of the first several panels as WeirdEyeOne and three other artists—ChrisRWK, Jos-L, and ZeroPro—worked for hours painting their images, attracting loads of attention from passers-by as well as inquiries from other business owners to do more outdoor pieces.

The remaining panels on D’Aguanno’s building will be completed this month by Highlands-based artist Ashley McFarland, known for her intricate, Art Deco-style sea creatures and highly successful exhibits all over the region.

As Peltz and Northrop photographed the finished pieces yesterday afternoon, three people stopped to admire the work.  One woman expressed her enthusiasm to finally see some outdoor art brightening up the area after many years of wondering why such a culturally rich town had no murals on display.

The completion of the Edwards Way mural project will be celebrated with an artist reception and pop-up exhibit later this Fall at the Arts Corner, 1st and W. Washington Avenue, home of the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council.
