MIDDLETOWN, NJ – This Sunday, September 11, 2016, in honor of the 15th anniversary of 9/11, the Middletown United Methodist Church, 924 Middletown-Lincroft Road, will hold a Memorial and Patriotic Remembrance from 8:40 A.M to 9:40 A.M. The Middletown Township Fire Department, Lincroft First Aid and Rescue Squad, Boys Scouts of America Troop 32, American Red Cross of New Jersey and the Middletown Township Mayor’s Office will join in the remembrance service.
“This is a community event and everyone is invited to attend,” said Pastor Derrick Doherty. “As residents and firefighters in Middletown, you all came together as a family that day and in the trials that followed. I hope we can come together again to share in the healing on this important anniversary. In remembrance of the tragedy each important moment will be acknowledged by special recognition. Also, everyone is welcomed to the pancake breakfast which will follow the service.”
MTFD Ex-Chief Doug Corbet, who was the chief in 2001, recalls the many “ unknowns” he and his men faced that day. He said, “We pulled together at a moment’s notice. We had 100 firemen in Atlantic Highlands by 11 A.M. because we were expecting to take care of the many anticipated survivors from the World Trade coming over by ferry. Some had to be decontaminated, and some just needed to talk while others needed a way home. There were people who made it to our train station, but didn’t live here and many citizens stepped up to help. I was very proud of my firefighters and of Middletown residents that day.”
