ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Eight teams of filmmakers met the challenge of FilmOneFest’s First Annual FilmSlam on March 11-12, FilmOneFest announced.

Organized by Co-Directors Robert O’Connor and Corinna Thuss, FilmSlam began with a March 11 kick-off party at The Arts Corner, located at 135 First Ave. Presented with a prop, a line of dialogue and a location, each team had 24-hours to write, direct and produce a film of less than two minutes in length. Teams had to meet an 8 pm deadline to deliver their completed films to the FilmOneFest Benefit Dinner taking place on March 12 at the Beacon Hill Country Club.

The films premiered at the Benefit Dinner, and a panel of judges reviewed the shorts based on Originality, Creative Inclusion of the Prop/Dialogue/Location Assignment, Production Value and Strength of Storytelling. Cash prizes were awarded to the first, second and third place winners.

First place recipients Silver Style Pennant included team members Mike Boylan, Michael Altino, Jon Altino and Patrick Monaghan. Boylan has submitted several films to FilmOneFest, including 2015’s jury award-winning short film on the Atlantic Highlands’ Chilifest. Boylan, who said he’s wanted to try a 24-hour film festival since he first heard of the idea, added that their team name is a combination of his film production company, Pennant Films, and Michael Altino’s production company, Silver Style Pictures. Boylan’s previous submissions to FilmOneFest include 10 Second Time Machine, winner of the Audience Choice Award, and Brotherly Love, which won a jury award.

Hailing from Middletown, NJ and Brooklyn, NY, second place winners The Mongooses included team members Thomas Leonard, Ada McCrady, Daniel Leonard, Hadley Mueller and Michael Sherman. Thomas Leonard said that the experience was “exhausting but a true test in pushing the limits of what you know.”  He is also a previous participant in FilmOneFest, with his short film, Cigs, taking the Audience Choice Award last year.

Third place winners, The Bagsville Initiative, includes New Jersey natives Rich Elliot, Ryan Barry, Maria Coppinger, Lauren Perez, and Keith Laviola. After hearing about FilmSlam in a Facebook post, the team members thought “writing, shooting and editing a film so quickly would be a fun and an exciting challenge,” Elliot said. FilmSlam was their introduction to FilmOneFest, but have plans to be involved in upcoming events.
