ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Mother Teresa Regional School, Atlantic Highlands, will close its doors in June due to declining enrollment and financial difficulties, it was announced Jan. 15. The news was conveyed in a letter to parents and faculty from JoAnn Tier, the Diocese of Trenton’s moderator of Catholic education and superintendent of schools. Supporting parish communities were to be informed at Masses Jan. 16 and 17.
The pre-K through 8th grade school was established in September 2006 as a way to provide a Catholic school education to faith communities in the Bayshore area. Tier wrote in her letter, “Support from invested parishes has been vital in providing the means for a Catholic education at Mother Teresa Regional School. Sincere thanks are extended to the pastors and parishioners of St. Catherine Parish in Middletown, Our Lady of Perpetual Help-St. Agnes Parish in the Atlantic Highlands and the Highlands, and Holy Family Parish in Union Beach. Also acknowledged are the contributions from St. Ann Parish, Keansburg, with the donation of rental income from the former St. Ann School. The involvement and support of the pastors are sincerely appreciated.”
Tier cited the substantial value that has been imparted to the students over the years by the “compassion, motivation and inspiration” of the faculty of MTRS. She also cited the commitment of the administration, faculty, staff and parents in making a positive difference in the lives of the students.
However, with a K-8 enrollment that had fallen below 100 students, and financial challenges experienced by several of the supporting parishes, the school could no longer be sustained. Classes and activities at MTRS will continue through June, at which time the school will officially close.
Tier noted that information will be provided to the families of MTRS about area Catholic schools, especially upcoming open houses and registration opportunities. Job search support measures will be offered to the faculty by the Diocese.
