RED BANK, NJ – Accomplished soloists will join the award-winning Monmouth Civic Chorus in Joy to the World on Sunday, December 20, 2015, at 4:00 p.m. at the historic Count Basie Theatre, 99 Monmouth Street, Red Bank, New Jersey. Soprano Blythe Lilly Quelin is a multi-talented musician with an extensive background of advanced study in violin, piano, and voice. She has performed the roles of Ifigenia in Handel’s Oreste, Amy in Mark Adamo’s Little Women, and Janthe in Heinrich Marschner’s Der Vampyr. Ms. Quelin has had the opportunity to work with exceptional teachers, coaches, and conductors such as Daniel Beckwith, Ryan Brandau, Margaret Cusack, Charles Dutoit, Joseph Flummerfelt, Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Nicholas McGegan, J. J. Penna, Brian Schkeeper, and Michael Tilson Thomas.

As an ensemble singer, Ms. Quelin recorded the album Heaven to Earth and performed in Lakmé and I Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. She has also performed Handel’s Messiah, Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, Berlioz’s Requiem, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with some of the greatest orchestras in the world. Ms. Quelin is also active as a recitalist, specializing in works by Poulenc, Fauré, Debussy, Brahms, and Schumann.

Ms. Quelin maintains a teaching studio of twenty violin, piano, and voice students in the Princeton, NJ area. She also sings as a cantor and soprano soloist at Queenship of Mary Catholic Church in Plainsboro, NJ.

Brian Dougherty, tenor, is active as a soloist and ensemble singer. Recognized for his beautiful and expressive singing, he enjoys a varied career on the concert, opera, and cabaret stage. Oratorio credits include solo engagements with the Mostly Mozart Festival, American Symphony, Clarion Music Society, Dessoff Choirs, Berkshire Bach Society, Melodious Accord, Music Before 1800, New York Concert Singers, Philomusica, and Westminster Choir. Mr. Dougherty has performed in theatrical and operatic productions with FringeNYC, West End Theatre, Fredericksburg Theatre Company, Berkshire Opera, and Spoleto Festival USA.

As an ensemble singer, Mr. Dougherty has appeared with many of the world’s premiere symphony orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Moscow Virtuosi, London Symphonietta, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. He performs regularly with Voices of Ascension, the New York Choral Artists, Concert Chorale of New York, the Choir of St. Ignatius Loyola, Musica Sacra, and Manhattan Voices, among others.

Mr. Dougherty’s discography includes recordings on the Naxos, Nonesuch, Gothic, Delos, Teldec, Wildflower, and Original Cast labels. His television credits include HBO’s acclaimed mini-series Angels in America, PBS’ Live from Lincoln Center, and NBC’s Today.

Ms. Quelin and Mr. Dougherty will be featured in Bach’s Gloria in Excelsis, a cantata that will sound familiar to fans of the magnificent Mass in B Minor. The chorus will premiere a new Christmas Suite by Artistic Director Dr. Ryan James Brandau, featuring his own arrangements of holiday favorites, along with selections from Handel’s beloved Messiah. For many music lovers, it won’t be Christmas without it.

The Monmouth Civic Chorus has been called “near-flawless” (Asbury Park Press), “alive and evocative” (The Star-Ledger) and “superior” (Red Bank Green). The Chorus is the proud recipient of the 2008 ASCAP/Chorus America Alice Parker Award, and the 2010 Spinnaker Award for Arts and Culture from the Eastern Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce.
