Principal Rosemary Schutz is proud to host such an event, “We are so honored to have our veterans and their families on-hand to celebrate with our students! This holiday provides such an important lesson on our history, the importance of reflection, and to be thankful to those real-life heroes who put their lives on the line for us every day.” In order to show their gratitude, her students have been practicing songs, writing poetry and creating artwork. The Student Council has also been running a supply drive for the current troops stationed overseas; they coordinated with their local A&P and Foodtown grocery stores as collection drop-off locations. Mrs. Schutz said, “I really enjoy watching the students practice; they are going to sing a medley of Armed Forces songs, the award-winning Henry Hudson Regional School Marching Band will perform as well as local bagpipe artist, Christina Fitzpatrick. I’m so proud of how excited and engaged our students are at HES.”

Maryann Fiel, Board of Education and PTO member, has been instrumental in organizing and promoting the event, “Highlands has such a strong sense of community and we all come together to help out when needed. This holiday represents so much for our history and culture and clearly our locals agree; when I approached our businesses for donations, they came pouring in! Windansea Restaurant, Bay Avenue Bakery, Bahr’s Restaurant, Havana Tropical, Girls Cafe, Katz’s, Water Witch Coffee, et al, Quick Check, Dunkin Doughnuts of Atlantic Highlands and The Montecalvo Family all came forward to donate to the breakfast. We are very lucky to have such generous businesses and neighbors.”
