ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Gary D. Saretzky to speak on Nineteenth Century New Jersey Photographers on Wednesday, November 18, at the Strauss Mansion Museum in Atlantic Highlands.Atlantic Highlands, NJ:  On November 18, the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society hosts Gary D. Saretzky with a profusely illustrated slide lecture on leading photographers working in New Jersey before 1900.

Drawing on his database of about 3,000 pioneering New Jersey photographers, Saretzky will discuss the work of leading shore photographers active in Monmouth County before 1900, including DeHart & Letson, G.W. Pach, J.C. Scott, and Emma Ivins.  


In conjunction with this talk, the Historical Society will display photographs drawn from Society archives and members’ collections, including works by G.W. Pach and others.  The exhibition includes scenes of transportation, recreation, entertainment and daily life at the Jersey Shore in the Victorian era.

Gary D. Saretzky, archivist and photographer, has taught at Trenton State College and Mercer County Community College and is Coordinator of the Public History Internship Program for the Rutgers University History Department.  He is an exhibiting photographer, and author of numerous articles of photographic history and criticism.  The Archivist of Monmouth County since 1994, Saretzky lectures regularly on photographic history and photographic conservation.  His publications include, “Nineteenth Century New Jersey Photographers,” New Jersey History, Fall/Winter 2004.

This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.  It is held at the Strauss Mansion, National and State Historic Landmark and home of the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society at 27 Prospect Circle in Atlantic Highlands.
