ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – The Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club, (AHYC), is hosting an Art Show and Sale on Sunday, November 15, 2015 from Noon until 4:30 PM. Admission is FREE. The AHYC is located at 6 Simon Lake Drive, 2nd floor of Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands, NJ.
Don’t miss this opportunity to view and buy original artwork and mingle with our local artists. Proceeds from a Silent Auction will be donated to 180 Turning Lives Around and Atlantic Highlands Sailing Education Program for Junior Sailors Scholarships.
Featured artists include: Mike Quon a graphic fine artist and painter, best known for his colorful, bold brushstroke style and whimsical depictions of favorite places, everyday objects and architecture. Living and working now in the Greater NY area, a California native, he graduated from UCLA with a BFA and furthered his studies at Art Center College in Los Angeles studying under the influences of Richard Diebenkorn and pop artist Ed Ruscha. Greatly influenced by popular culture, and POP art, his father was an animator for The Walt Disney Company, and his credits include working on the animated classics Fantasia and Dumbo. Mike Quon’s artwork has made appearances in gallery and museum exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris, as well as in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, The New York Times, The US Air Force Art Collection and The New York Historical Society. He is the author of two books, Non-Traditional Design and Corporate Graphics published by PBC International. Megan Heath Gilhool is a self-taught artist and has been painting and working with colors since childhood. Megan is known for her colorful painted murals in restaurants, bars, show houses, private homes and the public library. She is often commissioned to do pet and house portraits. Megan owns and runs ArtSea Gallery along with her husband Michael. ArtSea Gallery is an art gallery featuring local NJ artists and artisans. It is also a gift shop and art classes are held for all ages. It is located at 1112 Ocean Avenue, Sea Bright, NJ;
Yan Cao is a watercolor artist who comes at painting from the art history side after attending Art History courses at NYU, and working as a docent at Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cao brings a gestural, atmospheric sensibility to her work. She chose watercolor as her medium of artistic expression because it “so brilliantly captures light and atmosphere in nature”. She studied with local artist Ken Stetz and attended watercolor workshops at the Cooper Union School of Art. Her work can be seen at Second Story Art Gallery in Atlantic Highlands and Artsea Gallery in SeaBright. They will also be displayed at the lobby of the Blue Bay Inn in Atlantic Highlands.

Michael Scherfen is a trained graphic designer and worked as an advertising art director for 27 years. That training has given him unparallelled drafting skills – skills that form the foundation of his richly painted watercolors. His paintings range from highly rendered portraits, landscapes and seascapes. Originally from the West Coast he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles, CA. Colleen Day Kropfl specializes in letter art, illustrations, and up-cycled design in Millburn, NJ. Her enthusiasm for ‘the written word as art’ was kindled and refined while in Southern California working under the guidance of Janey Saavedra. She currently strives to communicate custom ideas and concepts in an alluring yet informative way, always searching for that elusive ‘wow’ factor;
Charlie St. Angel is an experienced woodcarver who primarily uses a single knife to hand carve a variety of animals “in the round.” The minimally detailed forms and smooth natural finishes are designed to bring out the essence of each creature and the natural color and grain of the exotic woods St. Angel uses. His carvings require careful hand-sanding as well as the application and burnishing of multiple coats of paste wax. In 2012, after a hiatus of 20 years, St. Angel returned to carving and began showing his work in local juried arts/crafts shows including Christian Brothers Academy, Art in the Park in Long Branch, Asbury Park Historical Society’s Boardwalk Art Show;
Concetta E. Volpe is an avid en plein air painter where she believes in capturing the atmospheric light and the true changing colors of nature. She is known for her illustrious colors on her palette. She has studied with John P. Osborne who introduced the Prismatic Palette to which she uses in her paintings today. She has received many honors, including: 1st Place award for Oils in 2015,2014 and 2013 juried shows, Art Society of Old Greenwich Bendheim Gallery; Best in Show 2012 juried show, The Flinn Gallery, Greenwich, CT. Kent Art Association Award in The Ridgewood Art Institute’s 32nd Regional Juried Competition, and Honorable Mention in 2003 at The Riverside Yacht Club Art Show and Sale.
