Dear Editor,

I was outraged to learn that Mayor Keith Summey of North Charleston, South Carolina plans to keep active the health insurance policy of now fired Police Officer Michael Slager (previously a resident of New Jersey) who has been charged with murdering an African-American man by shooting him eight times and then filing false police reports to cover up his criminal actions.

Mayor Summey has claimed that the health insurance is being kept active because Slager’s wife is pregnant and it is the “humane” thing to do. How is improperly giving public employee benefits to someone who got fired for murdering someone humane?

In this country, any pregnant woman always has the right to treatment in an emergency room and can receive free prenatal care through Medicaid. Slager’s wife can receive all the services she needs through Planned Parenthood’s Charleston Health Center.

What’s next? A North Charleston funded health insurance program for ISIS fighters?

We treat each of our patients as part of the family at Atlantic Highlands Animal Hospital. We offer top-quality surgical and dental treatments for cats and dogs. For the best pet care in the Atlantic Highlands, NJ, call us at (732) 291-4400.

I bet the city isn’t giving any health benefits to the children of the victim. Shame on Mayor Summey and the City of North Charleston, SC.
