ARTIST’S BIO – MARE AKANAMare Akana is a multi-media artist whose work focuses on her lifelong passion: horses and the sea. A native of Honolulu, HI, she grew up exploring tide pools and observing sea creatures in the reef. She has worked with horses throughout her life and experienced much of the industry as a Thoroughbred and Standardbred groom, rider, trainer, farm manager and vet tech. She credits Hawaiian Lio Lii Pony Club mentor Terry Tugman, the late USET coach MAJ Hector Carmona and the many horses she’s known over the years with teaching her.
As an artist, she began working with clay and metals at Punahou School and later at Syracuse University. When she was growing up, World Trade Center architect and family friend Minoru Yamasaki admired her designs in silver and encouraged her. She has studied with John Marshall, Lee DuSell, Gerald Brommer, Christine Merriman, Louis Mendez and Mark Walnock. Her work is in the personal collection of internationally renowned artist Louise Bourgeois as well as in private collections onboth coasts, Hawaii and Peru. She is an award winning artist who has participated in numerous juried shows and is currently an Exhibiting member at The Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury. Her work is available at the Monmouth and Noyes Museum shops, as well as at Monmouth Park Racetrack.
Mare lives a life in the arts and is also an actor and board member of the NJ Repertory Company in Long Branch. She is the coordinator of Long Branch’s annual Art in the Park, a fine art and artisanal craft event.
Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. at the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center, 128 Ocean Avenue, Monmouth Beach, NJ from September to April.
