Rumson, NJ – On February 8th, there will be a new addition to the art and architecture of St. George’s-by-the-River Episcopal Church in Rumson.
St. George’s was first established in 1874 as St. George’s-on-the-Hill on Bellevue Avenue in Rumson. The present structure, which was brainchild of Mrs. William Everard Strong, was designed by the firm of Walker and Gillette of New York City and consecrated in 1908.
Beneath the large Gothic stained glass window featuring St. George, the architects installed a limestone niche, which has remained empty for over one hundred years. It is unknown whether this space was planned to hold a sculpture, but the emptiness of the space called out to one of St. George’s parishioners.

Last year, Denise Weiner commissioned a sculpture to be placed in this space as a memorial to her parents, Agnes and Alex De Rosa. This spectacular bronze sculpture of Jesus, walking on water, was created by local artist Jim Fitzmaurice. “There has been a certain serendipity to this endeavor, and I am so happy to have been a part of it. It has truly been a spiritual experience and quite rewarding working with Denise to create something that now becomes a permanent addition to one of our town’s most historic buildings. I am quite blessed.”
The unveiling and dedication of the sculpture will take place on February 8th, following St. George’s 10:00 AM service. The public is invited to attend this service, the unveiling and dedication of the sculpture, and a reception to follow in the Church’s Ralph Hall.
