ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – On September 9, 2014, Marc DeMasi, security guard for the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor, was given an award by the Atlantic Highlands Harbor Commission for saving the life of a 73-year-old individual.

The man was described as having lost his footing and having no upper body strength, which limited his chances for survival in the water.  But luckily, Mr. DeMasi was in the area and heard his cry for help.

DeMasi threw a lifesaving ring into the water to keep him afloat, saving his life. Harbor Commission member, John Amici described the saved individual’s feelings of his rescue as, “very appreciative.”

When Mr. DeMasi was asked how he felt about the rescue, he replied, “To be honest, it’s hard to describe now that I think about it. I was just doing what anyone else would’ve done. I wasn’t expecting to be called a hero, but I am honored.”
