Middletown, New Jersey – Earlier this summer, a crew of area Boy Scouts and their leaders experienced a life-changing summer trek through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.  Philmont covers 214 square miles of vast wilderness with trails that climb from 6,500 feet to as high as 12,441 feet.  During their stay, Boy Scouts and Venture Crews from Troops 246 and 32 hiked 74 miles over 10 days.

These Scouts and their advisors carried everything they needed to survive during their adventure on their backs while hiking from camp to camp.  They also participated in backcountry programs, including rock climbing, mountain biking, fly-fishing, and gold prospecting.  The trek included a conservation project, where Scouts learned and participated in the upkeep of Philmont’s ecosystem.  Along the trail, Scouts endured tough challenges, including backpacking in bear and mountain lion territory, steep climbs, and often-inclement weather.

“The highest point we hiked was to Mount Phillips at 11,742 feet,” explains George Putykewycz, a Life Scout from Troop 32, who participated in the journey.  “We also rock climbed, spar pole climbed (telephone poles), went black powder rifle shooting, learned about blacksmithing, and participated in a conservation project.”

BSA Troops teach boys outdoor skills, self reliance, respect for nature, and respect for others, while promoting community service increases his ability to give back to his family, his country, and himself.  Additionally, area Troops give back to our community, conducting food drives for local pantries, participating in civic events, and completing Eagle Projects aimed specifically to assist local organizations.
