david prown 120I am not sure if I ever heard of, or saw, any previews for the new movie “A Most Wanted Man” which stars the late Philip Seymour Hoffman’s in his final film. His body of work clearly goes down in history as one of the all time greats and it is utterly sad that he recently lost battle his life-long drug and alcohol addiction. His filmography is storied and highly regarded at the upper echelon.

This film was based in Hamburg, Germany; post 9/11, as this city was the location where events lead terrorist based his planning operations. Hoffman plays the head of a German Security agency whose office is specifically focuses on terrorist threats/players in Germany’s Islamic Community. You get the sense that Hoffman has been in the security business for a long time and something bad happened during his previous assignment.

This is a classic dark, complicated international thriller that is in places hard to follow the story and the characters, yet it really works. Reminded me throughout of the great like film “Usual Suspects” where some parts of the movie you don’t understand but it is okay as it pretty much sorts itself out at the end.

The movie co-stars Rachel McAdams and William Defoe who are nearly as captivating on the screen as Mr. Hoffman. I have got to believe this film will earn him a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

This crusty, grizzled lead security specialist has tons of experience, instincts and contacts which prove to be invaluable but also frustrating to his superiors due to his unorthodox tactics.

This movie is 2 hours and 1 minute long. I bet Mr. Hoffman is on the screen for 2 hours of this film. For the entire 2 hours, he is puffing on clearly filterless cigarettes and quite often is seen drinking. I can’t imagine the wear and tear on this already long abused and overweight body. Nevertheless this late actor will be remembered as one of the greats of all time, especially the last 20 years.

I would not expect this movie to be box office success new or in the theaters for long unfortunately. However I would highly recommend it meticulously made film with fabulous sets, music, sounds, feelings, characters etc. This is simply terrific film-making.
