Dear Editor,

In the State of New Jersey, a person who causes another’s death when they are aware of and consciously disregard a substantial and unjustifiable risk that death will result from their conduct is guilty of felony Reckless Manslaughter (codified at N.J.S.A  2C:11-4b(1)).

On December 2, 2013 a 15-month-old baby girl named Sabina Rose Joana died at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. Her cause of death? A fatal Dravet syndrome epileptic seizure.

Dravet syndrome is a rare and catastrophic form of intractable epilepsy that begins in infancy. The only medication found to effectively put the syndrome into remission is medical marijuana containing high levels of the cannabinoid called Cannabidiol, more commonly referred to by its abbreviation, CBD.

It is common for Dravet syndrome patients to go from 300 seizures per week down to one or none after beginning treatment with high-CBD medical marijuana. It is the only lifesaving medicine available for the condition. CNN documented this in the case of Charlotte Figi, a six-year-old Colorado girl with the same condition.

At the time of her tragic and entirely preventable death, Sabina Rose had a pending application for a medical marijuana card that was being delayed by Governor Chris Christie’s red tape, designed to destroy the NJ medical marijuana program. If Sabina Rose had access to medical marijuana, she would be alive today.

Governor Christie knowingly and purposefully withheld lifesaving medical marijuana from Sabina Rose and is therefore guilty of Reckless Manslaughter and Official Misconduct. Christie misused his public office to kill a seriously-ill baby girl and must be held legally accountable for his sociopathic criminal conduct.

Sabina Rose’s grieving parents, Philip and Paula Joana of Hopatcong will never get their beautiful baby daughter back. Governor Christie is a menace to society, a serious threat to public safety and must be made to pay for his unconscionable crimes with a lifetime of incarceration. There is no political excuse for a dead infant.
