ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – The municipal yacht harbor that Hurricane Sandy nearly destroyed a year ago will be re-dedicated in a ceremony starting at 3 p.m. Friday.

Gov. Chris Christie and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno are expected to attend the ceremony marking the completion of the $20 million restoration project, along with Mayor Frederick J. Rast II and other area officials and former borough mayors. All borough residents are also invited .

Sandy struck on Oct. 29 last year and destroyed many boats and much of the harbor. Due to its importance to the local economy and the need to restore normalcy, the borough moved quickly to restore it, employing T&M Associates served as the lead engineer for the initial damage assessment.

According the Borough Administrator Adam Hubeny, the harbor is now fully restored and up to 90% of the rebuilding costs will be reimbursed by FEMA.

The municipal harbor is among the largest public marinas on the East Coast, a major hub for ferry service into Manhattan and a critical source of local revenue. The harbor accommodates over 500 vessels and has a mooring field for 172 sailboats. The Harbor is also a transient hub for safe refuge for those traveling along the Atlantic Ocean coast from Florida to New England.
