RED BANK, NJ – A hymn festival leads off the 2013-14 Tower Hill Concert Series sponsored by The First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank, 255 Harding Road. The festival, planned for Nov. 3 at 7 p.m., celebrates “Glory to God,” the newly published hymnal of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A). The hymnal is the product of nine years of research, including a review of more than 10,000 congregational songs.
“This new hymnal gives us the opportunity to make available a wealth of hymns and spiritual songs that have arisen since publication of the 1990 hymnal,” says Adam Peithmann, the church’s director of music ministries. “It allows us to acquaint worshipers with resources from communities around the world and maintain the great heritage of congregational songs that have come to us from previous generations.”
The audience will join the Tower Hill Choir, Calvin Ringers, brass, and the church’s Celebration team in singing familiar hymns and newer sacred songs from the hymnal. Also on the concert schedule are:
Lessons and Carols, December 14, 7 p.m.: Led by the 55-voice Tower Hill Choir, the Christmas story is celebrated with scripture readings and carols of French origin.
The Oratorio Choir, March 16, 7 p.m.: Members of area choirs and choruses join singers from the Tower Hill Choir to present Joseph Haydn’s “Missa in Angustiis” (Mass for Troubled Times), with stringed orchestra.
