NAVESINK, NJ – The members of Navesink Hook & Ladder Fire Co. # 1 will be taking to the streets of their community to deliver donation solicitation letters to all addresses that they serve as part of their annual Fund Drive. The deliveries will be made in the days surrounding Sunday, June 2.
“Besides our Fireman’s Fair in August, this is our big fund raiser and we are unable to serve the community without it,” explained Josh Black, firefighter and chairman of the event. Navesink Fire Company is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that mainly functions financially through donations. “The monies we collect in this drive will go towards the purchase and maintenance of our fire engines and equipment, the upkeep of our firehouse, and training for our firefighters,” said Black.

Each year, the company visits all homes and businesses in their primary response area to deliver letters containing company information and donation instructions. Black explained that while other organizations use mailings, Navesink has chosen to present the letters themselves. “It gives us a chance to get out into the community and meet some of the people we protect and show that we are there for them,” he said.
Black expressed the importance that home and business owners in Navesink take the time to read and respond to the fire company’s letter. “It’s easy to support us. During the drive, we don’t knock on your door, we don’t ask any of your time; we just leave an envelope at your door. We just ask that you take a moment to consider the service we provide to you for virtually nothing, and make a donation,” he said. “No donation is too small and every little bit helps.”
Donations can be mailed to the company’s address at PO Box 341, Navesink, NJ, 07752.
According to Black, a positive response to the Fund Drive by the community is a great tribute to the company’s members. He said, “We are just like you. We have families and we have jobs, but we drop all of that when someone needs help. Your support helps show us that what we do as volunteers is worth it.” When not responding to the firehouse, the volunteer members of the company work as carpenters, electricians, fishermen, police officers, letter carriers, heavy machinery operators, deli owners, and surveyors, to name a few.
Navesink Hook & Ladder was established on May 1, 1886 and was the first company of what would later become the Middletown Township Fire Department. They respond to emergencies involving, but not limited to, fire, carbon monoxide, natural gas, motor vehicle accidents, and rescues. The company primarily serves the community of Navesink, but also assist the other ten fire companies in Middletown, as well as neighboring towns when requested.
